There are massive differences in the prices garages are charging to empty tanks and clean fuel systems - with some demanding £5,000 while others quote just over £100.If the mistake is spotted before the car is driven off then the problem can easily be rectified by simply pumping out the fuel from the tank. In a diesel car the fuel is used as a lubricant. But petrol is a solvent so extensive cleaning is required if a diesel car is driven with that fuel. They found one Chrysler garage quoted around £5,000 to fix a Grand Voyager, saying the car would need new fuel injectors, injector pump, fuel filter and fuel pump in addition to flushing out. Mr Johns commented: "Modern vehicles are much more resilient than many of the garages we spoke to would have us believe. This long list of inflated quotes smacks of profiteering." Garages may feel they can get away with charging high prices because repair bills for accidentally filling a car with the wrong fuel are often footed by insurance companies. Drivers of petrol cars cannot mistakenly fill up with diesel because diesel nozzles are made so that they are too wide to go into petrol fuel tanks. |
